Lagerstroemia
With hundreds of cultivars of crapemyrtle, L. indica, does the nursery/gardening world need additional? This question was posed when the Program delved into developing TRUE DWARF crapemyrtles. Where does the breeder find the genes for true dwarfness? The Chopin Series is marketed as 2 to 3 foot dwarf types, but grow 6 to 10 feet or more and are susceptible to mildew and Cercospora leaf spot. Dr. Don Egolf, U.S. National Arboretum, bred for ~30 years before releasing the true genetic dwarf ‘Pocomoke’ in 1998. ‘Chickasaw’ was released in 1989 and has not been a commercial success. Our program utilizes this germplasm to develop improved foliage and flower colors while maintaining genetic dwarfness. Over 3,000 seedlings have been evaluated, providing a mine of hidden genetic variety. The first have been released and will be introduced in 2006 by McCorkle Nurseries, Inc. as the Razzle DazzleTM Series.
‘Cherry Dazzle’
‘Cherry Dazzle’ is the first true red compact crapemyrtle, and it will truly Dazzle you! Leaves are highly resistant to mildew and Cercospora leaf spot. ‘Cherry Dazzle’ has a restrained, compact, mounded habit that is 3 to 5 feet high and wide in 4 to 5 years.

‘Raspberry Dazzle’
‘Raspberry Dazzle’ boasts raspberry red flowers in summer and although they are not as profusely borne as those of ‘Cherry Dazzle’, they are nonetheless impressive. These lovely raspberry colored flowers are nicely displayed against small, lustrous dark green leaves which develop into a showy red color in fall. ‘Raspberry Dazzle’ grows 4 to 5 feet high and 2 to 3 feet wide in 4 to 5 years. Though the foliage may develop slight mildew, it is reminiscent of Cotoneaster apiculatus and has a unique branching pattern to the foliage.
Common Name: Crapemyrtle
Hardiness Zone: 6 to 9
Height: 4-5’

‘Snow Dazzle’
‘Snow Dazzle’ is the first white-flowered dwarf crapemyrtle from our program. The youngest leaves are bronze-purple which mature to green and has a wavy surface. The pure, snow white flowers have showy yellow stamens which open in July-August. ‘Snow Dazzle’ has a compact-mounded habit and will reach 2 to 3 feet high and wide in 3 years. The foliage is highly mildew and Cercospora resistant, and ‘Snow Dazzle’ will occasionally develop a fast growing reversion shoot which should be removed.
Common Name: Crapemyrtle
Hardiness Zone: 6 to 9
Height: 2-3’
Exposure: Partial Sun to Full Sun |

‘Ruby Dazzle’
‘Ruby Dazzle’ is the most compact and slowest growing of the five selections. It is prized for its ruby-red-purple foliage and dense compact spreading habit. ‘Ruby Dazzle’ is a superior foliage plant and considered as a possible alternative to Crimson Pygmy barberry. The pink flowers of ‘Ruby Dazzle’ are sparsely produced in August and have a compact mounded habit that is 2 to 3 feet high and wide in 4 to 5 years. This selection requires no pruning as it maintains a uniform dense network of stems and foliage. The lack of required pruning, coupled with the beautiful, red-purple, mildew and Cercospora resistant foliage, will make this a wonderful addition to any garden.
Common Name: Crapemyrtle

‘Dazzle Me Pink’
Copious bubble gum-pink flowers froth the foliage of ‘Dazzle Me Pink’ in late June-July, while the lustrous, dark green leaves serve as a great contrast to the bright flowers. ‘Dazzle Me Pink’ grows from 3 to 5 feet high and wide in 5 to 7 years and has, for a period of 8 years, maintained a compact, mounded habit. The foliage is highly mildew resistant but does tend to abscise in autumn earlier than the other selections. ‘Dazzle Me Pink’ is the first to flower and is stunning in its best incarnation.
Common Name: Crapemyrtle
Hardiness Zone: 6 to 9
Height: 3-4’
Exposure: Partial Sun to Full Sun |

If flowers are removed when spent and before fruit set, another flush of flowers usually develops. In 2005, Cherry DazzleTM produced flowers into early in November in Dr. Mike Dirr’s Chapel Hill garden. The Razzle DazzleTM series will make great container plants, shrub border components, groupings and masses.
